Swimmers third at league meet

Jason Starr

The Skyline League swimming and diving championships played out just the way Summit High School thought it would

Saturday in Brighton. The Tigers swam and dove to third place, matching their team finish from the past two years. League favorite Brighton won the meet in its home pool, and Broomfield was second.

Summit’s team of state qualifiers for this weekend remained the same as senior Andy Richmond was just .24 seconds off the pace in the 50-yard freestyle. He finished fourth in the event. Senior Doug Borg added the 200 free to his list of events he’s qualified for with a fourth-place league finish. Sophomore Eric Lowe, who had already qualified in the 200 free, placed third in the event.

Lowe was unable to qualify for state in the 500 free, coming away with a fourth-place finish in 5 minutes, 35.18 seconds. Borg was second in the event, which he will probably swim at state.

Divers Joe Baldwin and Jon Rutter had quality performances, with Baldwin taking seventh and Rutter in ninth.

Pete Richmond was fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 backstroke, events he will compete in this weekend. Summit’s best finish came in the 200 medley relay, where the Tigers placed second. Summit’s 400 free relay was fourth.

Andy Richmond was fourth in the breaststroke, missing qualifying for state by less than half a second.

Third-year Tigers coach Graig Fischer was named co-Skyline League Coach of the Year, along with Legacy’s Gary Reece.
