Thursday races at Gold Run

special to the daily

Come out to the Gold Run Nordic Center tonight for a slate of classic cross country races. Gold Run, which hosted Thursday evening races in January and February, has two remaining races in March: tonight and March 18.

Jon “Zeke” Zdechlik, director of the center, has hosted the series this season to provide an opportunity for racers, perhaps some newer to the sport, to come out and race in a nonintimidating atmosphere.

“Middle school and high school kids are racing with their parents – and the kids usually win,” Zdechlik grinned.

The series offers 1k, 3k and 5k distances, and that makes it friendly to elementary school kids right on up to adults.

Following the race, the athletes meet inside the clubhouse for the post-race party, which often includes a light pasta snack, and a raffle of sporting goods items.

“This is a great, nonintimidating opportunity to come out and put a bib on and spend a fun night together as a family. It’s also the perfect day for weekend racers to do a hard interval.” Zdechlik said.
