Tiger boys’ lax upsets Palmer

Right after their lead was cut to 7-6, Tiger midfielder Tyler Nelson won back-to-back faceoffs – both leading to goals by sophomore George Gruber – and the Summit High boys’ lacrosse team pulled away for a 10-6 upset win over previously unbeaten Palmer Thursday on the road.

“We should play undefeated teams more often,” SHS head coach Karl Barth said. “They seem to rise to the competition.”

Summit jumped to an early 5-1 lead and never trailed from that point on. Even though Palmer made a comeback attempt early in the second half, the Tigers never wavered.

“It was definitely the most complete game they’ve played, for sure,” Barth said, “especially for playing against such a strong team.”

Gruber had five points off three goals and two assists, and Ben Daniels also had three goals. Dylan Horan had two goals and three assists.

Barth said the Tigers “really played well at both ends” and that the defense was “outstanding” throughout the game. Sophomore goalie Garrett Tousey made 18 stops, and Barth said defenseman Kyle Metzger had a “huge” game controlling ground balls for Summit.

The win puts the Tigers at 6-3 on the season and might end up as the win Summit needs to reach the postseason.

“We’ll have to see,” Barth said, noting there’s still plenty of season left. “It at least kept it alive.”

Summit hosts Cheyenne Mountain on Saturday at 11 a.m.
