Tiger gymnasts second at Conifer

CONIFER – The Summit High School gymnastics team wasn’t quite as sharp it was in its home opener, but the Tigers still managed a second-place showing in their first road test of the season Tuesday, a quad meet at Conifer.Summit’s score of 157.125 was better than both Conifer and Golden, but fell short of 5A Standley Lake’s 180.87. The meet took nearly all night, beginning at 6 and not finishing up until around 10.SHS coach Beth Flaherty said she knew it was tough to compete on the first day of school, but “I was disappointed with their performance. I accept no excuses.”Lauren Biegler led Summit in the floor exercise with an 8.55, only a tenth of a point ahead of Leilani Bruntz. Amelia Meier returned from an injury that kept her out of the season opener to post an 8.25.On vault, Bruntz was the top Tiger with an 8.15.Bruntz, Biegler and Emma Koenig all posted state-qualifying bars scores (8.0 or higher). Koenig’s 8.15 led the bunch.Beam was not as kind to SHS as their first two events. Only two Tiger gymnasts stuck their routines: Bruntz scored an 8.15 and senior Katie Lindbloom notched a 7.75.(Individual standings had not been made available as of Wednesday night.)Summit returns to action on Saturday morning in a dual at Columbine.
