Tiger hockey team tops Valor Christian

While the score looked good for the Summit High hockey team Saturday at Valor Christian, head coach Chris Ruhly wasn’t pleased with the Tigers’ performance in the 6-3 win.

“Our players lost control of their emotions in the third period,” he said. “I’m really disappointed with the lack of pride they showed.”

The game got heated late, as the Tigers pulled away for their third win in four games to start the season.

Senior goalie Andrew Dunlap stopped 27 shots, Dylan Junkermeier had two goals, and Ivy Marshall scored her first career varsity goal.

Still, Ruhly didn’t see the night as a success.

“We had eight penalties – one they converted on (for a powerplay goal) – and, in terms of effort and discipline, I’m just disappointed in the way we played,” he said.

Buck Marshall scored early in the first period on assists from Sean Farley and J.P. Shoeffield to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. And after Valor tied the score, senior Dak Dice set up goals for Kyle Metzger and Junkermeier.

Drake Blass and Ivy Marshall added to the lead in the second, before Junkermeier ended the scoring with a highlight-reel goal in which he beat a Valor defenseman and deked the team’s goalie for the score.

The Tigers (3-1) play at Aspen Friday at 5 p.m. before breaking for the holidays.
