Tigers endure the elements at Jeffco Stadium
LAKEWOOD The Tigers track and field team competed stoically in high winds at Jeffco Stadiums Elite Meet Friday, with cold gusts sometimes reaching up to 40 miles per hour. At the last regular meet of the season (consisting of both 4A and 5A teams), Tiger Boys placed 14th out of 19 schools and Tiger Girls placed 10th out of 17 schools. Both teams did well considering the level of competition and inclement weather, said Kristy McClain, SHS track and field head coach. So strong was the wind that officials determined the meet would not count toward state qualifications. When youre pushing hard, but it doesnt feel like youre going that fast … mentally, it can be defeating, McClain said. There was lots of competition. We dont normally compete against 5A schools.Stephen Ike broke a school record in the triple jump with a fourth place jump of 41 feet, two and a quarter inches. He also took third in the long jump (18 ft., 3.5 in.) and 6th place in the 300 meter hurdles (45 seconds).Freshman Julie Bishop placed second in the 3200 meter run. She ran a very smart race, McClain said. She tucked in and went with the leaders.Katie Sodergren placed third in the 800 (2 min., 38 sec.), third in the long jump (15 ft., 1 in.) and fourth in the triple jump (32 ft., .5 in.). Sharayah Dosset took fourth in shot put (29 ft., 2.75 in.) and sixth in discus (94 ft., 4 in.).Chris Rice placed sixth in the 3200 (10 minutes., 54 seconds) and Jenya Berino took seventh in the 3200 (13 min., 34 sec.). The girls 4×800, run by Sodergren, Berino, Julia Hayes and Julie Bishop, placed fifth (11 min., 11 sec.).The Tigers will compete in preliminary regionals on Thursday and regional finals on Saturday. Both meets will be at Jeffco Stadium.Caitlin Row can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or at (970) 668-4633.
