Tigers score nine runs in loss

ADAM BOFFEY

LAKEWOOD – The Summit High School baseball team may have suffered its eighth consecutive loss Saturday, but according to co-coach Gary Green, the Tigers displayed more signs of life than they have in the recent past.”They showed a lot of pride today,” Green said after SHS fell to Evergreen 14-9 at All Star Park in Lakewood. “There was a much better attitude than we’ve had the last two games. Teams went ahead on us early and we just laid down, but today we fought to the end.”It was Summit (1-14) that took an early lead Saturday, pouring on six runs in the first inning. The Cougars countered with five runs in the bottom of the first and the mutual scoring spree was under way.The Tigers clung to their lead until the third inning when they gave up four runs.Jordan Sitkoski pitched a complete game for Summit, giving up seven earned runs. Thanks to the offensive efforts of Justin Green (3-for-4, two doubles, three RBI), Scott Campbell (2-for-5, RBI) and Sitkoski (2-for-3, double, RBI), the Tigers matched their season high for runs, which they achieved in their lone victory – a shutout of Battle Mountain on March 27. It was poor defense that doomed the visitors Saturday, as SHS committed seven errors.”We definitely had the pitching to win the game, but the defense couldn’t hold it up for us today.” Green said. The Tigers are scheduled to travel to Clear Creek on Wednesday for their season finale.
