Tigers soccer survives OT thriller

ELIZABETH – The Summit Tigers beat D’Evelyn 2-1 Friday in a double-overtime thriller Friday that ended when Chris Nowakiwsky scored on a penalty kick.

The game held steady at 0-0 until 3:46 to go in regulation when Aaron George nailed a free kick from 50 yards out.

“It was a beautiful goal,” head coach Peter Shafroth said. “It went over the goalie and right into the corner of the goal.”

Unfortunately, George went down only a minute later with a hip injury that may force him to miss Wednesday’s homecoming game against Alameda.

The Jaguars got a break on a handball call against the Tigers that set D’Evelyn up for a penalty kick, which they converted on.

The teams stayed at a 1-1 tie through the first overtime and, with only 2:30 to go in the second overtime, the Tigers got their chance.

“Victor Casillas got on a breakaway when one of their center defenders came over and took him down in the box,” Shafroth said. “We were awarded the penalty kick and Nowakiwsky scored which gave us the victory.”

The soccer team returns to Farmer’s Korner for homecoming on Wednesday to face Alameda at 6 p.m.

Volleyball

The girls volleyball team’s domination of conference teams continued Friday night as the girls beat Elizabeth in three games, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-17.

The Tigers, holding second in the Class 4A Jeffco League, play third-ranked Evergreen at Summit High School on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

The homecoming pep rally follows the game.
