Tigers softball learns from first game of season

SILVERTHORNE – Before Summit High School softball’s first game of the season Friday against the Lutheran Lights, head coach Michelle Koehler said it would be a learning experience.

The Tigers, who fell to the Lights 12-0, learned they needed to get off to a good start. Summit fell behind 7-0 after the first inning.

“We really settled down after the first,” Koehler said. “We have a bunch of players playing new positions. We just had the first game jitters.”

One player who found her game after the first was pitcher Caitlyn Schmidt. Schmidt gave up just three hits the rest of the way and struck out four.

Her receiver, catcher Shannon Buhler, helped to settle down the Tigers’ ace.

“I just tell her to calm down,” Buhler said. “We need to work on our mental game. That’s where we’ll improve.”

Buhler did throw out a runner attempting to steal in the fourth.

The Tigers were being no-hit by the Lights’ Kaleigh Beekman until freshman Megan Doughtty slapped a single to right field in the sixth inning.

But, the loss wasn’t frustrating for Koehler and crew. They learned what they had as a team and how to improve.

“I found I have a bench,” Koehler said. “Summit hasn’t had that in a few years.”

Highlights for the Tigers also included a play by shortstop Cissy Daniels, who snagged a line drive in the third inning and gunned down a runner caught too far from first.

The Tigers travel to Middle Park Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
