Tigers softball wins first league game; takes seventh straight

GOLDEN – Apparently, the bats are still working.

Summit High School softball won its seventh straight game Tuesday, using a barrage of hits to beat Jefferson 18-4 in both teams’ first Class 4A Jeffco League game. For the Tigers, who also went 5-0 last weekend at the Blue River Softball Festival, it was proof that early season success can translate into league play.

“The team got the job done,” head coach Shelly Koehler said. “It was a really tough game to stay focused. Jefferson didn’t have strong pitching. They weren’t hitting. It’s a mental thing.”

From the first pitch, it seemed the Tigers were ready to play. Senior Brittany Ellsworth tripled in the top of the first and scored. Senior Megen Skulski had two singles, sophomore Cissy Daniels had a single and a double, senior Amy Clark had two singles.

“The rest of the team either had a single or a sacrifice,” Koehler said. “We had some really nice bunts. Everyone did their job at the plate.”

Junior Caitlin Schmidt earned her seventh win on the season. Freshman Megan Doughty finished the game on the mound.

Junior Shannon Buhler also returned behind the plate, a week after breaking her thumb.

The schedule for the Tigers becomes tougher, in a hurry.

The defending 4A state champs, Ralston Valley, visit Blue River Fields in Silverthorne Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Ralston Valley is also the defending league champ.
