After dominating the Los Alamos, N.M., girls’ rugby team 81-0 at Tiger Stadium last season, SHS head coach Karl Barth was hoping that Saturday’s rematch in New Mexico would provide his team with more of a learning experience than last year’s game.

Barth said he got just what he wanted, as Los Alamos came out “hungry,” holding the Tigers to 15 points in the first half.

Though the Tigers wound up with a 44-0 win, Los Alamos gave the Tigers a wake up call.

“I think the girls learned that they can’t get complacent,” Barth said. “We didn’t play our game. It may have been good enough to win, but not to our standards.”

Sophomore fullback Hiedi Gruber opened the scoring for the Tigers in the first half, and center Alex Cooper also broke through for a try.

Once the second half started, senior Lauren Danielsen took over. She scored four tries, upping her career total to 44, the most all-time in school history.

“She really stepped up when we needed it,” Barth said.

Senior Brittney Morgan and junior Brieanna Barto also added tries in the second half.

Besides picking up the scoring after halftime, the Tigers also played better defensively, Barth said. Senior locks Holly Atkinson and Catherine Scanlan were instrumental in clamping down the Los

Alamos offense.

“Together, they combined on a hit that would have made a football crowd roar,” Barth said.

The Tigers now have until Friday to work out any problems, as they will play a double header with the soccer team against Highlands Ranch at Tiger Stadium.

The rugby game will begin at 7 p.m.
