Entering its second year, the Breckenridge Independence 10K Trail Run boasts scenic trails, challenging terrain, mountain views and covers more than 1,000 vertical feet.

“The first half is a steady climb, and the second half winds through the trees,” Stacey Todd, recreation coordinator for the Town of Breck, said. “Even though it’s so close to town, you feel like you’re in the middle of no-where.”

One aid station will be set up at Sallie Barber Rd., but runners are encouraged to bring their own hydration systems.

“Last year being the first event, I thought we’d have 75 runners and we had 250,” she added. “We’re expecting a good turnout.”

Registration and bib pick-up begins Friday at 6:30 a.m., followed by the race start at 8:30 a.m.

The trail race, broken down into 12 age groups, is set up to encourage all levels of participation, from beginners to seasoned athletes.

“Everyone can do something,” Todd said. “It’s welcoming for everybody ” all ages and abilities. Last year, there was a wide-range of abilities ” Competitive runners, families, and even a few locals who were warming up for the mountain bike race later in the day.”

Race-day registration at the trailhead costs $25 for adults and $15 for youth. Today, participants can still pre-register at Mountain Outfitters: $20 for adults and $10 for youth.

“The early start allows runners to finish the race and watch the parade by 11 a.m.,” Todd said. “It’s a great start for a holiday. Enjoy the crisp mountain air and then participate in the rest of the day’s activities.”
