Uhlaender fifth in World Cup skeleton race

Summit County, CO Colorado

CESANA, Italy ” Recently crowned world champion Noelle Pikus-Pace of Utah won the bronze medal in the World Cup skeleton race Friday, with Breckenridge slider Katie Uhlaender fifth on the same track on which she took sixth in the 2006 Olympics.

Pikus-Pace missed those Games because of a compound fracture in her leg after being struck by a bobsled in a freak accident earlier in the Olympic season, causing her to miss making the team despite an incredible recovery.

“It’s a relief more than a joy,” Pikus-Pace said about winning her medal Friday. “I did it, and I knew I could do it.”

Current World Cup leader Uhlaender missed the medals by only 0.25 seconds, finishing fifth after climbing three positions in her second heat, and continues to lead in overall standings after having won silver and four gold medals this season in the first five World Cup races.

After Friday’s race, Uhlaender tops the World Cup circuit with 555 points. Pikus-Pace is second with 440 points.
