Wallace drops first match in state tourney

Dan Kelley/summit daily news

PUEBLO ” The first game of Julie Wallace’s match against Teri Mayeda of Lewis-Palmer High School bounced around deuce several times, but eventually went to Mayeda.

Most of the other games did, too.

“My serving was pretty on,” said the Summit High School senior. “I was really happy with the way I played.

Wallace lost the match, 0-6, 1-6.

“It was fun to be here, and I thought Julie played great,” said Summit head coach Rae Anderson. “She played pretty well.”

Wallace is not out of the tournament. If Mayeda wins her next two matches ” a strong possibility, considering she placed third in the state tournament last year ” Wallace will have the opportunity to enter the playback bracket for third place. If Mayeda loses either of those next two matches, Wallace’s tenure at the tournament will be over.

Action at the tournament, which is being held at the Pueblo city park, is temporarily suspended due to rain.
