Dew Tour returns to Breckenridge Ski Resort for 2016
Come this winter, Breckenridge will once more do the Dew.
Following some initial uncertainty as to the status of the annual action sports competition known as the Dew Tour, the popular ski and snowboard event will return to Breckenridge Ski Resort in 2016 for its 10th anniversary. Mountain and event partner TEN: The Enthusiast Network made the announcement public Tuesday and confirmed the dates of Dec. 8-11 for the four-day festival.
“I’m psyched it’s coming back,” said Breckenridge Mayor Eric Mamula. “There’s a cachet to having an event in your town, and Breck’s a world-class resort up there with Whistler, Vail and Aspen. It’s well done and a first-class event, great athletes come for it and it brings some energy to the town when, traditionally, it’s a little slower as we get ready for the season to really kick off.”
Not only will the winter fixture that features some of the world’s best in the ski and snowboard disciplines be returning to Breck, but it will also undergo a bit of a facelift. Both the slopestyle and halfpipe courses will offer innovative redesigns to provide something fresh for competitors, as well as fans, first-timers and vets, alike.

In addition, the format of the competition will also have a new flavor. It will again present its mainstay men’s and women’s individual contests but now also host a newfangled team challenge similar to one unveiled earlier this summer at the Dew Tour skateboarding event held in Long Beach, California, in July.
“An idea we like to toss around is reimagining the Dew Tour,” said Adam Cozens, vice president and GM of the action sports franchise. “On the course side, our focus is on what riders and skiers want from progression standpoint with modifications from what you typically see at a traditional large contest format. And then, with the addition of the team challenge, brand teams will compete against each other for the first time ever.”
The resort’s Freeway Terrain Park will once again act as the primary setting for the pre-holidays event. Already confirmed are back-to-back Dew Tour freeski slopestyle champ Gus Kenworthy as well as multi-year Dew Tour champion Danny Davis. Other top skiers and riders will be named in the coming months.
“Breck has a rich history of hosting premier actions sports events,” Jesse Keaveny, the resort’s marketing director, said in the release, “and we look forward to bringing this reimagined event to life for a worldwide audience. Breckenridge Ski Resort and the community are excited to have the winter Dew Tour back in Breck where it all began 10 years ago.”
After broadcast partner NBC decided to fold its action sports division, Alli Sports, this past September, there was some early question as to what might happen with the Dew Tour. NBC again returns as the televising operation for this year’s event and will air an event special on both Dec. 17 and Dec. 24, but it took the arrival of the Carlsbad, California-based TEN network to solidify the event’s position.
TEN is, among many entities, owner of adventure-lifestyle outfit GrindTV, on top of the TransWorld operations for motocross, BMX, skateboarding and snowboarding and POWDER ski magazine. And, as part of the company’s inaugural role with Dew Tour, the event will for the first time also function as a winter sports awards show, honoring the recipients of both the TransWorld snowboarding and POWDER ski prizes.
Through some new additions, the four-day competition will still act as a fan-friendly, integrated celebration of the intersection of music, actions sports and technology. Cozens said attendees can anticipate even more participatory components than prior years, so people can feel all the more connected to the athletes who perform incredible feats overhead high above the snow.
“The franchise and brand have been strong a lot of years and has a super solid foundation,” he said. “We just felt like we wanted to reimagine it and position it a little differently. Looking at other major ski and snowboard competitions out there — like the X Games, Olympics and U.S. Opens — we’re trying to create our own, unique identity in the core areas of competition and from the experiential side.”
The town, meanwhile, remains enthusiastic Dew Tour is back. Given all of the athletes, fans, crew and other operational staff who come through for the event, the area’s hotels usually see a bump in a time on the calendar when it otherwise would not. The long-term economic impacts are also felt through the international media coverage and in affirming Summit County as a premier snow sports destination.
“I think it’s got great benefits,” said Mamula. “It’s not just single-day sales but building future business and ending up on TV and with kids seeing it and asking their parents to bring them to Breck. It’s a lot more than just people coming to the event for that weekend.”
