Young lands 2003 tele freeski title

SUMMIT COUNTY – Silverthorne resident Taiga Young, 18, recently became the womens 2003 telemark freeskiing champion, despite missing the Crested Butte competition due to injury and the Snowbird, Utah, finals after the event was cancelled.

Young scored 50 points after winning the Alpine Meadows, Calif., and Jackson Hole, Wyo., competitions for a total of 100 points that landed her the series title. Dawn Cardinale of Carnelian Bay, Calif., was runner-up with 81 points.

Dylan Crossman of Alta, Utah, edged Snowbird’s Andy Rosenberg for the men’s title. Both finished with 95 points, but Crossman won with higher average line scores.

Young, who competes on the Karhu tele team, blew out her knee training for the slopestyle competition preceding the Crested Butte freeski event at the end of February, and will spend her summer bicycling and rehabilitating.
