Summit County has a calendar full of holiday events leading up to Christmas, catering to everyone from children to adults.

Whether you’re in search of family-friendly activities or the opportunity to do a shot-ski with more than 1,000 other people in hopes of breaking a world record, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a list of holiday-related happenings taking place in Summit during the next couple weeks.

Ullr Fest

Breckenridge’s beloved Ullr Fest, where locals pay homage to the Norse god of snow in hopes of a ski season full of powder, kicks off Dec. 12.

“Only Breckenridge could come up with an event like this,” historian Leigh Girvin said via email. “It’s so unique to our community because it combines our history as a mining town, the subsequent ‘white gold’ rush, and the heritage of our Norwegian ski town pioneers.”

Festivities begin with the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen in the Blue River Plaza at 3 p.m. followed by an attempt to break the unofficial record for world’s longest shot-ski at 3:30 p.m. The record is currently held by Park City, Utah, according to the Breckenridge Tourism Office, with the bar set at 1,385 participants. Breckenridge is shooting for 1,401 participants.

Breckenridge Distillery’s Shotski broke a world record as part of Ullr Fest, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, with 1,377 People, 495 Skis and a length of 2,469 feet.

After those events, hand-built floats will compete for a cash prize at the Ullr parade on Main Street from 4-5 p.m. before the Ullr bonfire in the East Sawmill Parking Lot at 5 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ DC, who will be playing out of the Red Bull event vehicle.

The next night, Friday Dec. 13, will be the Ullr Comedy Night at the Riverwalk Center featuring comedians Devin Siebold and Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald. The show starts at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $44, and proceeds benefit the Carriage House Early Learning Center.

Two of Saturday’s events will be at Stephen C. West Ice Arena: the Ullr Ice Skating Party from 12:30-2 p.m. and the Winter Ice Skating Show at 6:30 p.m.

“I just love the energy around Ullr Fest. It’s certainly a community event, and everyone’s excited about winter, snow, and skiing,” Girvin said. “And they love to celebrate it in this funny way that we started 61 years ago.”

Breckenridge History will also be hosting an Ullr historical tour ahead of the festivities from 4:30-5 p.m. on Dec. 11.

New to the event this year is the “Elf on the Shelf Craftacular” where Santa reads the story of the Elf on the Shelf at 2 p.m. There will also be hot cocoa and crafts onsite. For more information visit WarrenStation.com/.
