The Dillon Health Center’s Shaw Cancer Center will soon stop offering infusion therapies requiring patients in Summit County to travel to Edwards for these treatments, according to Vail Health.

The Shaw Cancer Center at the health center off U.S. Highway 6 in Dillon will remain open but infusion therapy — such as chemotherapy — will not be offered as of Nov. 1, Vail Health Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer Amanda Veit said in an email.

“The Shaw Cancer Center remains dedicated to patient care and elevating health across our mountain communities,” Veit said. “Patients can continue to receive breast care, breast imaging, including mammography, and cancer care, including medical oncology appointments, laboratory services, imaging and various in-clinic procedures in Dillon.”

The Shaw Cancer Center opened in Dillon in fall 2021, but the cost of infusion drugs and changes to the insurance climate in Summit County and Colorado caused the center to operate at an “unsustainable financial loss” for infusion services, Veit said.

The Shaw Cancer Center in Dillon provides more than 1,500 in-clinic visits each year and will continue to offer cancer care other than infusion therapy, Welsh added. Patients will be able to have their lab tests drawn in Dillon and then receive their infusion treatment at the Shaw Cancer Center in Edwards, she said.

“All impacted patients have been notified of changes,” Veit added. “And we have made plans to continue providing the highest quality care for their individual survivorship journey.”
