Where to Locally Dine Gluten-Free
I can tell you right off the bat that Café Profusion offers the best gluten-free food in the county!
Say you’ve opted for a gluten-free lifestyle. Does that condemn you to a life of having to avoid dining out? Certainly not in Summit County, CO!
There are many reasons to opt for gluten-free dining: for some people, removing wheat products from their diet is a great way to lose weight; others simply feel better, as wheat can be an allergen and hard to digest. And for a small percentage of the population, those with celiac disease, gluten from wheat products can trigger an immune response and cause serious illness.
I asked a number of local residents who eat gluten-free to share their favorite restaurants that offer gluten-free options, and got some enthusiastic responses. A word of caution for those with serious wheat allergies: be sure to check in advance with restaurants to verify how they prepare their menu items, if ingesting any wheat products might make you ill. And otherwise — enjoy!
I caught up with Courtney Hampton, DJ and owner of Hampton Entertainment, while she was shopping in Whole Foods for Glutina, a gluten-free cracker, and one of the many gluten-free food items offered by Whole Foods. Courtney’s favorite dining spot: Inxpot in Keystone. “Their gluten-free bread and sandwiches are awesome!”
Julia Landon, owner of Bun in the Oven Bakery, loves Cafe Profusion in Dillon. “I can tell you right off the bat that Café Profusion offers the best gluten-free food in the county — and the best food in general, in my opinion!” Julia’s bakery offers 100 percent gluten-free products, which can be found at Yellow Arrow Coffee and The Crown, both in Breckenridge, and at Abbey’s Coffee in Frisco.
Some other great options came from Vanesa Garcia, who lives in Silverthorne and is a ski instructor at Keystone. “My favorite pizza place is Last Chance in Summit Cove. Blue Moon Bakery has great gluten-free treats and a delicious breakfast sandwich with gluten-free bread made in house.”
Cookbook author, with his wife Shauna, and longtime Breckenridge resident Dan Ahern (“Gluten-Free Girl: American Classics Reinvented”) rounded out my search with these excellent suggestions: “Dick Carlton’s restaurants, such as Mi Casa, do a great job with gluten free. And Fatty’s Pizzeria has been a great, safe spot for my wife — and the Columbine Cafe is another great spot.” Ahern offers this piece of advice for gluten-free diners: “We always judge a place by how the wait staff react when we mention my wife is gluten free. If the restaurant truly cares about the food they are serving, then gluten-free people should feel safe.”
