1 year ago: Breckenridge Ski Resort co-founder honored at Snowsports Hall of Fame

One of Breckenridge Ski Resort’s main founders, Sigurd Rockne, was welcomed into the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Sept. 7, 2024. He and Trygve Berge, now both in their 90s, attended in person with additional inductees Lindsey Vonn, Native American speed skier Ross Anderson and ski racing coach Johno McBride.

5 year ago: Summit County public health director recognized for exemplary service

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland’s job was primarily behind the scenes. Since then, she’s become Summit County’s leader in its response to a global health crisis — and was recently recognized for her efforts. In August 2020, the Colorado Public Health Association and the Colorado Health Foundation recognized Wineland with the Exemplary Frontier Public Health Nurse Award. The award is given to one public health nurse each year for demonstrating exemplary service to a rural Colorado or frontier community.

10 years ago: Centura Health Physician Group buys out High Country Healthcare

Centura Health Physician Group has bought out High Country Healthcare. High Country Healthcare was established more than 20 years ago and now employs 16 primary- and specialty-care physicians, a nurse midwife and two physician assistants in four Summit County locations, including urgent-care centers in Breckenridge and Silverthorne. The group’s employees will join Centura Health’s network of nearly 500 medical providers in more than 100 locations in Colorado and western Kansas, and the High Country Healthcare providers and staff will be on Centura Health’s payroll starting in November.

15 years ago: Frisco gets fun, educational and ‘buggy’ at third annual Beetle Fest

Frisco held its third-annual Beetle Fest Saturday on Main Street Sept. 11, 2010, as part of an effort to raise awareness for Summit County’s mountain pine beetle problem. The event sheds light on the pine beetles’ impact on the Rocky Mountain forest, and all proceeds go to the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District. BeetleFest activities included a 4K Beetle Stomp Run, a lumberjack show, wood carving demonstrations, beating a Volkswagen Bug with a bat, and live music from the bluegrass band White Water Ramble.

30 years ago: Summit High names Gretchen Nies as its new athletic director

Summit High School’s new athletic director is a woman, one of about 50 female athletic directors in the state. Gretchen Nies is already busy as she looks forward to the future, which includes a new high school and all that comes with it (athletic fields, auditoriums, fieldhouses, and more) on the under-construction site at Farmer’s Corner. Nies came to the area in 1984, while she was working with the Girl Scouts of America and previously worked with the high school as a teacher and coach. Her job also includes duties as the activities director in charge of overseeing music, drama, speech and other after-school clubs and teams.

125 years ago: Breckenridge telephone exchange starts with 22 connections

The Breckenridge telephone exchange is now in working order. District manager Whalen returned to Leadville after completing the plant on Sept. 13, 1900. The exchange starts with 21 subscribers, plus a phone at the Denver Hotel, where the central office is located. Subscribers include the Summit County Journal, Summit County clerk’s office, Colorado & Southern Railway, several local businesses and three residences.
