Breckenridge Tourism Office President Lucy Kay gave Breckenridge Town Council a rundown of holiday tourism numbers at a Tuesday, Jan. 13, meeting.

The holiday period, which the Breckenridge Tourism Office considers to be from Dec. 18 to Jan. 4, was flat compared to last year. Local restaurant and bar owners said visitation felt similar, with many noting they find people don’t cancel holiday vacations. They said, due to the poor conditions at the local resorts, they experienced an increased business volume because people were looking for other things to do besides skiing.

Kay said, currently, the only month that has more booked room nights than last year is December.

She said for winter season lodging, nights booked are down 8% compared to last year. She said because the average daily rate people pay to stay in Breckenridge lodging offerings has gone up, revenue is down only 5%.

“I think if it would snow, that would change, but we’ll see,” she said.

According to Kay, lodging data demonstrates the town will have slightly fewer room nights booked over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, which is the weekend before Monday, Jan. 19.

Kay said many of Breckenridge’s competitive set, including other mountain towns like Park City and Steamboat, are also down in room nights for this season.
