Colorado Mountain College now accepting applications for free outdoor leadership course

Colorado Mountain College is now accepting applications for its free summer outdoor leadership course for students across the Western Slope.
Located at the college’s Leadville campus, the five-day First Ascent Youth Leadership program runs from June 21-26 and is open to in-district students in Pitkin, Garfield, Summit, Lake, Chaffee, Eagle and Routt counties who will enter eighth and ninth grade this fall.
The course helps students to develop leadership skills such as problem-solving, communication, confidence and personal growth, with sessions to explore post-secondary career options, according to a news release. Outdoor activities include rock climbing at Camp Hale, rafting on the Arkansas River and hiking Mount Elbert, the highest mountain in Colorado.
The deadline to apply is May 1. The course is free, but enrollment is limited to 35 students and can be competitive. Interested students are encouraged to apply early. Students will live at the college’s residential hall in Leadville for the week.
