Fourth of July forecasts are in, and meteorologists are saying things are looking pretty sunny across Colorado.

The National Weather Service out of Boulder is forecasting mostly clear skies and temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s starting for most of the mountains on the holiday, and meteorologists are predicting temperatures will drop a degree or two in high-elevation towns by the time the weekend rolls around, such as Grand, Summit and Eagle counties. No strong wind or precipitation are currently in the forecast for these areas except for a chance for scattered thunderstorms on Friday for areas of the state.

Forecaster Caitlyn Mensch said while areas west of the Continental Divide should be mostly in the clear for precipitation during the holiday weekend, areas to the east could potentially see scattered showers, especially Friday. Weather.gov shows some slight chances for rain over the weekend in the mountains.

She said despite warm daytime temperatures, anyone who plans on camping in areas above 9,000 feet should be prepared to bring some layers for once the sun sets.

“If you’re camping out there in the mountains, you could see temperatures actually go below freezing,” Mensch said, noting it will likely drop to the low 30s.

Things will be warmer in west-central and western areas of Colorado. The National Weather Service out of Grand Junction is forecasting temperatures reaching nearly 80 degrees in Routt County. Forecaster David Byers said things will start off in the mid- to high-70s for the holiday and will rise to around 80 beginning Friday through the weekend with next to no clouds in the forecast.

Going even further west, from Moffat County stretching to the Utah border including areas such as Dinosaur, will be even warmer and temperatures could reach mid 80s during the holiday weekend.

“It’s one of those times you’ll want to have sunscreen with you. … We also will have a wildfire watch out for that area starting (the afternoon of July 3),” Byers said. The fire weather watch will begin at 12 p.m. on July 3 and last until 9 p.m. and applies to the northwest corner of the state.

Temperatures continue to warm up further south towards the Grand Junction area, and Byers said it is slated to be in the low-90s throughout the holiday weekend. Things are a bit cooler, but not by much, over in the Durango area with temperatures anticipated to be in the mids-80s throughout the holiday.

Additionally the National Weather Service out of Grand Junction is forecasting that the San Juan Mountains will be in the high-70s through the holiday and weekend.

Byers said some of the highest temperatures in the state will be in the Four Corners region in the southwest of Colorado, which is forecasted to be in the mid-90s. He said things heat up significantly going into Utah and Moab could remain at around 100 degrees throughout the weekend.

Denver and Boulder are forecasted to be in the low 80s and sunny going into the holiday and will warm up to around 90 by Saturday.
