School closure
In a 6-to-1 vote, the Summit School District Board of Education decided to close Breckenridge Elementary and consolidate with Upper Blue Elementary by the start of the 2027-28 school year. Built in 1965, Breckenridge Elementary is the oldest educational facility in the county and has the highest amount of maintenance and construction needs to remain operational, an estimated cost of $27 million.
Population losses
Population losses in several of Colorado’s Western Slope resort counties underscore a growing trend: as housing and cost-of-living pressures mount, more residents are moving out than moving in. A significant factor behind Colorado’s slowed growth is a reduction in domestic migration, or people moving here from other states. Census estimates rank Colorado 48th in the nation for domestic migration. Ten years ago, it was third.
Health care enrollment
Due to skyrocketing costs for Cover All Coloradans, lawmakers gave approval to a proposal to limit enrollment and end certain benefits starting this year. The program provides health coverage to Medicaid for low-income immigrant children and pregnant women, regardless of immigration status. The program went into effect last year and has cost the state more than six times its original estimate.
