English transcript:
ICE tension
In the wake of ICE detentions in Summit County and across the Western Slope, community members have described an atmosphere of fear that has infiltrated workplaces and schools. Construction businesses have reported fewer workers showing up, and some school districts in the mountains (including Summit) have documented impacts to attendance. This year, Voces Unidas says it has confirmed that ICE has carried out detentions in Summit, Lake, Grand, Eagle, Routt, Moffat, Pitkin, Garfield, Mesa, Chaffee, La Plata, Rio Blanco and Montrose counties.
School pay
Summit School District support staff members — including bus drivers, custodians, paraprofessionals and other non-licensed employees — are seeking to become unionized for the sake of negotiating higher wages. Bus drivers, for example, start at $29.26 an hour while custodians start at $19.65 an hour. The Summit County Education Association is in support of the effort.
Nonprofit demand
Local nonprofits expect calls for assistance to ramp up in the fall as the weather gets cold, the days get shorter and people deal with a lapse in employment between seasonal jobs during the off-season. This fall, though, nonprofit leaders say there have been some added pressures to the services they provide as the impact of federal funding cuts trickles down into local communities. The Family and Intercultural Resource Center is serving around 650 families a week. This is around 80 families more per week compared to this time last year.
