English transcript:
School consolidation
While no official decisions have been made, Summit School District is weighing a potential consolidation of elementary schools and potential bond or mill levy override ballot measures. The superintendent said the district is seeing enrollment rates drop more quickly than anticipated. This impacts the district’s finances because state funding is tied to enrollment numbers. One proposal would consolidate Frisco Elementary School into Summit Cove Elementary School and another proposes consolidating Breckenridge Elementary School into Upper Blue Elementary.
Vaping flavor ban
Summit County staff presented updates about nicotine use-prevention efforts at a recent meeting. Local youth advocacy for vaping flavor bans helped get them passed in towns earlier this year. Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Keystone and Silverthorne passed flavor bans, along with additional strategies to crack down on retailers selling illegal nicotine products. The bans are set to take effect Jan. 1. Youth vaping became a concern in 2017 and 2018, after data from the state’s Healthy Kids Colorado survey showed high levels of students having reported using a vape pen.
Silverthorne fire code
As fire district officials proposed changes to update Silverthorne’s fire code next year, town officials raised concerns about how those changes could impact building costs in an area where home prices are already high. For example, fire officials proposed reducing the requirement to have a sprinkler system in residential homes from 6,000 to 4,500 square feet. A local construction executive estimated a sprinkler system could cost $30,000-$35,000 for a 4,500-square-foot home.
