Local quilters recognized
Special to the Daily
The Colorado Quilting Council (CQC), a statewide quilting organization, held its monthly meeting at Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge July 23. A part of the meeting was an award presentation of CQC’s annual Outreach Award. This award is designed to recognize individuals or organizations that made a significant contribution to quilting. Pat Larson nominated two local quilters, Jill Michener and Myrlene Zimmerman. Penny Christensen/CQC president and Judy Keim/CQC outreach chair presented the awards.
The Summit County area quilting presence would be seriously limited without the two following individuals. Summit County presents a multitude of issues that restrict a cohesive quilting environment, including a transient, seasonal population, weather issues, etc. Both of these recipients have been prolific in their quilt-related volunteer activities, both within and outside of Summit County.
The Summit Quilters, mentioned below, is a local organization that meets twice a month at the Senior Center in Frisco. Jill Michener was a founding member of the Summit Quilters in 1992, has held all of this group’s positions and established various education programs within the organization. Jill participates in the annual Summit Quilters quilt show, including presenting quilting demos. As a charity quilt maker, her donation organizations include ABC Quilts, Front Range Nursing home, Linus Quilts and more. She was instrumental in “The Quilters,” a play presented at a local theater. Having been a CQC member for many years, Jill and was on the outreach committee the previous two years. She continues to assist novice quilters, passing on her love of quilting.
Myrlene Zimmerman has been a member of the Summit Quilters since 1999, has held every Summit Quilters position and taught numerous classes. Myrlene organized the Summit Quilters annual quilt show for many years. She too is a charity quilt maker, including donations to the same organizations as Jill, has been a CQC member for many years and was on the Outreach committee the previous two years. Myrlene proposed holding the July 2011 meeting in Breckenridge and was a major organizer. She is unbelievably tireless! Jill and Myrlene’s efforts, hard work and dedication are certainly appreciated by CQC members, Summit Quilters and so many others.
