The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office said that deputies witnessed the man put an item, later discovered to be a loaded gun, behind a rock as he approached them

The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office says that it discovered weapons, tactical gear and ammunition in a vehicle belonging to a man who deputies arrested Monday, Dec. 16, on a warrant out of Summit County.

Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Clear Creek County deputies noticed a suspicious vehicle with fictitious plates and an obscured vehicle identification number parked in a dirt lot in Silver Plume, the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.

Deputies were eventually able to obtain the vehicle identification number and determine that the car was registered to a 40-year-old man who had an extraditable warrant out of Summit County for failure to comply, the post states. Deputies also reportedly received an alert that the individual had “violent tendencies” and should be considered armed and dangerous.

As deputies were running the warrant, they noticed a man walking toward them down a mountain trail and watched him place an item behind a rock, according to the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies took the man into custody on the Summit County warrant without incident.

Behind the rock, deputies found a loaded 9mm handgun and — upon searching the vehicle with fictitious plates — discovered a loaded, short-barreled rifle with no serial number, six high-capacity magazines, numerous boxes of ammunition, a Kevlar tactical vest, a tactical helmet, a police scanner, a federal law enforcement replica badge, burglary tools and drug paraphernalia, according to the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to the warrant, the Sheriff’s Office says its arrested the man on charges of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, impersonating a police officer, two counts of violation of a protection order, unlawful conduct involving an unserialized firearm, prohibited large capacity magazine, possession of burglary tools and three counts of possessing drug paraphernalia.
