A man reported missing in Summit County last month was discovered dead Friday, Feb. 2, near Montezuma Road east of Keystone.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Summit County Rescue Group discovered the body of Scott Walling, 33, under the snow near where he had been camping, the sheriff’s office said in a news release that afternoon. Foul play is not suspected.

“I regret to inform our community that, with heavy hearts, we have located the missing individual, Scott Walling, deceased,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in the release. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”

Known to camp in and around Summit County since 2015, Walling had been reported missing by his mother, Bethany Greenley, on Jan. 25, after the family hadn’t heard from him in nine days, according to the sheriff’s office.

Earlier in January, a local Summit County church had provided Walling with a tent, sleeping bag and tarp as well as a ride to Montezuma Road, where he set up camp, the release states. At some point mid-January, Walling had returned to the church for a blanket and Greenley had intermittent contact with him via emails, phone calls and text messages through Jan. 16, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Walling had recently been experiencing medical concerns and increased challenges with his mental health, the release states. The information provided to deputies by Walling’s family clearly identified him as an at-risk adult, prompting an immediate search, the Sheriff’s Office stated in its news release.

Walling was entered into local, state and national databases and forensic, ground and aerial drone searches were conducted. Businesses and locations where Walling was known to frequent were reportedly also searched and monitored.

When another coordinated ground search was conducted Friday, Walling’s body was quickly recovered, the release states. The search was likely helped by the fact that recent unseasonable temperatures reduced the snowpack, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“Our dedicated teams worked tirelessly to bring closure, and we ask for the community’s continued support and respect for the privacy of the grieving loved ones,” FitzSimons said. “This is another case where the entire community assisted us, and for that we are so grateful.”
