The National Repertory Orchestra based in Breckenridge has announced its Summer Music Festival lineup and season theme of “American Adventures” to honor the country’s 250th and the state of Colorado’s 150th anniversaries.
“Each concert is a salute to the adventurous spirit that exemplifies America over the last 250 years,” said Dave Peters, CEO, in a news release.
This summer, the National Repertory Orchestra will perform the world premieres of two pieces commissioned to celebrate the milestone birthdays of both the state and the nation. The summer festival is intended to be a musical journey that reflects the stories and spirit that define the United States.
This season’s festival will launch Saturday, June 20, with “Dreams of the New World.” Each summer, the National Repertory Orchestra convenes 80 young professional musicians from around the world for an intensive fellowship dedicated to performance and professional development. This year’s group of fellows are from 12 different countries, 26 states and 64 cities. Michael Stern serves as music director.
The season will feature works by famous composers including Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin and John Williams.
Among the highlights are the world premieres of two commissioned works. Composer Leigha Amick’s “A Fanfare for Colorado’s Sesquicentennial” will debut on Colorado’s 150th anniversary — Saturday, Aug. 1 — while composer Tanner Porter will premiere a new work inspired by the Colorado River during the season finale.
The orchestra will also introduce a new “Music, Mix & Mingle” concert series beginning Wednesday, June 24, with “American Landscapes.” The event will include a pre-concert social hour followed by a chamber music performance and a one-hour concert.
Other featured performances include “A Night at the Opera” on Saturday, June 27, which will feature the Summit Choral Society and soloists from Central City Opera performing works by Mozart, Verdi and Puccini.
The season will also include a live-to-film presentation of “Jurassic Park in Concert” on Saturday, July 18. The orchestra will perform John Williams’ score alongside a screening of the film.
In addition to ticketed performances, the orchestra plans to present a variety of free community concerts in Breckenridge and Summit County throughout the summer.
