Real-life homeowner wildfire experiences

We will hear directly from a homeowner who has gone through a major wildfire, lost much and published a book about the experience to help others be better prepared for similar outcomes. Award-winning author and researcher Linda Masterson tackles a subject she knows all too well in “Surviving Wildfire: Get Prepared, Stay Alive, Rebuild Your Life (A Handbook for Homeowners).” Masterson’s home and 72-acre tree farm burned to the ground in a Colorado wildfire in 2011, leaving her with little but her laptop and a fierce determination to get back on her feet and get on with her life. Read more about Masterson, her history, mission and goals. Masterson will talk about next steps: what homeowners, associations, property managers, and other stakeholders can do to better protect themselves, their animals and their property against wildfire. What you need to be asking your insurance agents, how you can best protect yourself to help prepare for future recovery and more. Host a foreign student

Hosting a foreign student can bring a whole new perspective to your family. Having someone from another country stay in your home can be a real eye-opener for kids and parents alike. Suddenly your “American-ness” is showing. The ordinary way you do things, the typical activities and rhythms of your day are revealed as not the only way or best way of doing something. The thought of hosting an international student might be intimidating at first. “What if he hears me yelling at the kids?” “What if she thinks we are total freaks?” But don’t fear! Students adapt quickly and won’t embarrass you or tell your family secrets. There is something about being a part of a family that instills that even in an apparent stranger. The beauty is that after a few weeks, that stranger suddenly becomes an integral part of your family. For information on hosting a student please contact Mary Elizabeth Johnson at (303) 709-2180 or visit http://www.edutrav.org
