Summit County Sheriff’s Office assisted with homicide investigation in Lake County, among other notable calls last week

The Summit County Sheriff's Office also helped more than one intoxicated individual last week

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office last week arrested a driver for driving under the influence and assisted law enforcement in Lake County with locating a suspect in a homicide case.

The following incidents occurred between Monday, April 1, and Sunday, April 7, according to a weekly summary of notable calls for service published by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

One day last week, a 32-year-old man collapsed at a bar at one of the ski resorts, and it was soon discovered that he was unconscious and not breathing. After ski patrol performed CPR, the man regained consciousness and was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony Summit Hospital. A family member later confirmed the man was intoxicated and suffers from a heart condition.

Also last week, a woman called to report that a younger man followed her from the bus stop to her apartment. When deputies responded to the scene, the man was incoherent, yelling and climbing in the snow, and he would not acknowledge the deputies. Deputies placed the man into protective custody and he was transported to St. Anthony Summit Hospital for further evaluation.

The Sheriff’s Office also helped last week after a nurse requested a welfare check on a 10-year-old girl who had been involved in a ski accident and was taken to the ski resort’s medical center. The mother told staff that she would take the child to St. Anthony Summit Hospital herself rather than by ambulance, but the mother and daughter never checked in at the hospital, causing worry due to the girl’s significant head injury.

Deputies were able to determine the mother’s full name and that the family lived out of state. A voicemail was left for the mother explaining the seriousness of the injury and advising her to reach out to the hospital.

Also last week, a man reported that he heard three gunshots from near the local golf course. Deputies searched the area after observing fireworks go off nearby, but they were unable to locate the origin of the fireworks. The man called back and informed the deputies that what he heard was fireworks and not gunshots.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office also assisted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office last week in locating a “homicide/bombing suspect” from Mesa County at a Lake County campground. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office provided a drone as well as a technician and detective for air support. The homicide suspect was reportedly found dead in his vehicle and appeared to have killed himself.

While on a traffic stop last week, a sheriff’s deputy observed a man stumbling down the median of Colorado Highway 9. The deputy walked over to the median and assisted the man, who was highly intoxicated, into the back of her patrol car. The man’s clothing was covered in snow and frozen to his body. He was transported to St. Anthony Summit Hospital.

Deputies also responded last week when the Colorado Department of Transportation reported a truck parked in the roadway, impeding plow operations. When deputies arrived, they located a man unconscious in the driver’s seat. Deputies knocked and announced themselves, but the man, who appeared to be breathing, did not move.

Deputies then opened the unlocked front passenger door and called out to the man for about 30 seconds with no response. Finally, the man acknowledged the deputies by sitting up and speaking incoherently.

EMTs tried to evaluate the man, but he refused to cooperate. He appeared highly intoxicated, and an empty 18-pack of beer was located on the floor of the truck. The man physically resisted when he was told he was under arrest and continued to be uncooperative while deputies placed him into a patrol car, according to the sheriff’s log.

Both the Breckenridge and Frisco police departments reportedly assisted at the hospital while the man continued to be uncooperative. The man refused to answer medical questions but was medically cleared to be taken into custody at the Summit County jail.

Also last week, sheriff’s deputies responded after a man riding a Summit Stage bus was reported to be threatening other passengers with a firearm. The bus driver was instructed to evacuate the bus while law enforcement was en route.

Frisco police were able to detain the suspect without incident, and sheriff’s deputies interviewed multiple witnesses, determining that the man and another passenger had gotten into a verbal argument. The man at one point reached into his backpack as if he was going to retrieve a weapon, but no witnesses observed a gun.

The man consented to a search of his bag, and no firearm was found. The investigation revealed no crime, and all parties were allowed back on the bus.
