The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after graffiti depicting “racist” and antisemitic messages was discovered on the historic Wellington Ore Bin, located in French Gulch just outside of Breckenridge in Summit County Open Space.
“This filth has no place in our community. Summit County Open Space staff have worked tirelessly this week to remove it,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a Facebook post about the investigation that sought information into the “racist” graffiti.
The post asks anyone with information about the graffiti to call non-emergency dispatch at 970-668-8600 to speak with a deputy.
“… (Not) only was the graffiti destructive and widespread, it was on a beloved historical structure, but even that pales when considering the message trying to be sent. It’s a serious crime, contrary to everything this community stands for,” Summit County Sheriff’s office Lt. Mike Schilling wrote in a text message to a Summit Daily News reporter.
To help identify any suspects, multiple photographs of the graffiti were posted to the Summit County Sheriff’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/SummitSheriffCO.
