Noon: Authorities received a report of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 westbound around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. The crash involved three vehicles and caused a semitractor-trailer to catch fire, resulting in one person being transported to the hospital, according to Colorado State Patrol trooper Gabriel Moltrer.

The crash near mile marker 208 closed the westbound lanes until 11:24 a.m., Moltrer said. Austyn Dineen, a Colorado Department of Transportation information officer, said it took crews “some time” to clear debris and tow cars off the scene.

The highway was closed between exits 205 and 216, east of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels and near Silverthorne, respectively. Moltrer said officials opened Loveland Pass as an alternate route around 7:20 a.m., despite it having a planned closure Tuesday.

11:25 a.m.: Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are open to traffic.

10:30 a.m.: A three-vehicle crash that led to a fire around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, caused Interstate 70 westbound to close this morning between the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels and Silverthorne.

Austyn Dineen, a Colorado Department of Transportation information officer, said around 10:30 a.m. that the closure should last another 30-45 minutes. The closure started before 9 a.m., and Dineen said it has taken time for crews to remove debris and tow vehicles away from the scene.

8:30 a.m.: A vehicle fire has closed Interstate 70 westbound between the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels and Silverthorne, according to CoTrip.org.

Traffic is being held east of the tunnels and diverted over U.S. Highway 6 via Loveland Pass despite a planned maintenance closure.

Motorists should be prepared for long delays, according to CoTrip.org.
