Letter to the editor: I was deeply upset by ICE raids in Summit County

I am deeply upset by the Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, raids in our community.

I live extremely close to the home that was bashed into. Uniquely, my daughter and her family formerly lived in that home. In fact, two of my grandchildren were born in that home, making it even more meaningful to me. Aside from that, the fact that there were people in civilian clothing with heavy arms and masks over their faces breaking down doors was extremely scary. I realize that the excuse was a warrant — the same thing that Abrego Garcia was charged with. It seems many Hispanics that the powers in charge want to get out of this county have been so charged. I just do not believe it. With such a charge, these people can be deported without due process and we, the public never see the facts.

Hacienda Real, which was also searched with equipment vital to running this business confiscated, was closed. It is my understanding that Hacienda management was cooperating with authorities when their business was shut down. Why!? These raids scare and anger the entire community. There is no good reason to harass and upset all of us.

ICE is the only police-type authority I know of that doesn’t wear a uniform. When I was a kid, masked people in civilian clothes with guns drawn were the bad guys. And back then people who were abducted by aliens went to the police. Now, the authorities abduct aliens (though I call these people neighbors).
