Letter to the editor: Reducing fire restrictions ahead of Labor Day was bad

As a homeowner in Silverthorne and an avid hiker, I continue to be disappointed with visitors who have no regard for fire danger and the impact it can have on those of us who live, work and play in Summit County. I read every week about forest fires starting from illegal camp fires not properly extinguished by visitors. The penalties for having an illegal fire are obviously not sufficient to dissuade folks from starting one. Let’s make the punishment fit the crime. For the county to reduce the fire danger so folks can enjoy a holiday weekend is incomprehensible. It sends a really dangerous message that your enjoyment is more important than everyone’s safety.
