Letter to the editor: The recpath is dangerous and needs changes to ensure safety

The government needs to do more to improve the safety of the recreational pathway around Dillon Reservoir. Acause of emergency room admissions on the weekend is bikers who have been injured in bike crashes on the recpath.

The recpath is poorly designed and has too much traffic. It is too narrow for the traffic. It has a lot of curves, turns, uphill climbs and descents. Trees create blind curves. Many users are unfamiliar with the recpath, and are not experienced bike handlers. Many users ride too fast. They make dangerous passes on blind curves. E-bikes allow people to ride faster than they should. Road bikers ride very fast and lean in at the turns on the too narrow path.

I doubt that the new kiosk maps will be effective at reducing the recpath injuries. The path around the lake needs to be widened by 2 feet, blind turns eliminated and bike speeds reduced. Since, the recpath is increasing in popularity, and local businesses are exploiting that popularity, the problem will only get worse.
