On Wednesday, Nov. 5, the Breckenridge Police Department took to their social media channels to warn the public about hungry bears in the Breckenridge area.

According to the post, the police department has seen increased bear presence in town in recent days. The post goes on to explain that bears are currently preparing for hibernation and looking for meals.

Bears need close to 20,000 calories a day throughout the early fall in order to prepare for hibernation. Black bears are curious, smart and very adaptable, the release states.

The Breckenridge Police Department is offering tips to prevent bears from breaking into cars for food. The tips include locking all doors and windows, taking your keys, parking strategically, hiding valuables and not leaving the vehicle running.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife typically see bears enter hibernation in early November.
