BRECKENRIDGE – A 14-year-old Colorado Springs girl died Friday after a ski incident on intermediate Spruce trail at Breckenridge Ski Resort, according to a press release from the resort.

Haley Rose Gans, a homeschool student, was reportedly “skiing very fast and into a tree,” according to a press release from Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson.

Cause and manner of death are pending investigation but are related to blunt force trauma to the chest, according to Richardson.

A call came in to Ski Patrol at 11:48 a.m. and Flight for Life provided advanced life support before the girl was transported by ambulance to Breckenridge Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to the press release.

The girl was wearing a helmet.

Witnesses say the Flight for Life helicopter landed on the trail and the lift was closed during the emergency.

This is Colorado’s first reported skier death of the 2009-10 season.
