Drunk driver hits patrol car, deputies issue fire ban citations, stalker violates restraining order and more, according to Summit County Sheriff’s Office
Last week, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to a man trespassing with a chainsaw, a man shooting his gun at a campsite and a report of drugs found in a rental unit.
The following incidents occurred between Monday, Aug. 11, and Sunday, Aug. 17, according to the weekly log of notable calls published by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
A drunk driver hit an unoccupied Sheriff’s Office vehicle Tuesday, Aug. 12, while the deputy was conducting a traffic stop on Colorado Highway 9 near Breckenridge. A Frisco Police officer stopped the suspect shortly afterward, and law enforcement took the driver into custody on charges including DUI. No injuries were reported.
Deputies contacted a homeowner having a campfire in their backyard Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Summit Cove. They gave the homeowner a citation for violating Stage 2 fire restrictions and made sure the homeowner fully extinguished the fire.
A rental property owner Wednesday, Aug. 13, reported finding a white, powdery substance in her unit. Deputies collected multiple baggies of evidence, which contained trace amounts of ketamine, and are still investigating.
Deputies on ATV patrol in the Lincoln Meadows area Wednesday, Aug. 13, found an abandoned fire still burning. Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District members responded and fully extinguished the fire.
A deputy saw two people launch into the Dillon Reservoir in kayaks Wednesday, Aug. 13, and noticed one did not have a personal floatation device. The deputy spoke to the pair, and the one without a lifejacket said it was in his car. The deputy offered to go with him to get it, and he admitted he did not have one. The deputy told them about personal floatation device rules and gave them a warning. They left the area.
In Heeney, a homeowner Thursday, Aug. 14, reported an unknown man entered a detached garden room on their property the night before and may have slept inside. Some items had been moved around, but there was no damage and nothing appeared to be missing, but the investigation is ongoing.
A woman Thursday, Aug. 14, reported her neighbor was harassing her by staring at her as they approached her property. The neighbor was looking toward the road from their own balcony. Deputies explained to the woman that her neighbor observing her from their own property was not harassment and found no criminal activity.
A hiker fell about 10 feet down the waterfalls at Lower Blue Lakes on Friday, Aug. 15, breaking two fingers, dislocating a knee and injuring their ribs. Deputies and Summit County Rescue Group members found the man and helped him walk to the trailhead, where he took his own vehicle to get medical treatment.
A deputy met Friday, Aug. 15, with a sailboat owner who, earlier this summer, received a violation notice for failing to register his boat but continued to sail and participated in multiple regattas. The owner acknowledged his responsibility for not registering the boat, and the deputy issued him two more citations for failure to register and operating an unregistered vessel.
Deputies responded Saturday, Aug. 16, to a report of a backyard fire at a property in the Farmers Korner neighborhood. They found two fires burning on the property and issued the resident a citation for violating Stage 2 fire restrictions. The resident fully extinguished the fires before deputies left.
A woman reported a man she had a protection order against might have left a gift on her doorstep with a disturbing message Sunday, Aug. 17. Deputies could not find the suspect that night but did contact him the next day. He admitted to leaving the package and expressed his love for the woman. Deputies arrested him and took him to the Summit County Jail for stalking and violating the restraining order.
A homeowner near the Dillon Reservoir reported a man walking through his property with a chainsaw Sunday, Aug. 17. When he confronted the man, he got angry and screamed obscenities at the homeowner. Deputies found the man as he was leaving the area, investigated the situation and issued him a summons for trespassing and disorderly conduct.
Deputies got a call for assistance Sunday, Aug. 17, from two hikers on Quandary Peak whose dog injured its paws and could not walk. To get back to the trailhead, one hiker tried carrying the dog but became exhausted and lightheaded. Deputies and Summit County Rescue Group members found the hikers, gave the lightheaded one oxygen and rescued the dog using a litter. The woman walked out on her own, and there were no further injuries reported.
Deputies got a call for help about two kayakers with an overturned kayak Sunday, Aug. 17, on the Green Mountain Reservoir. Before deputies arrived, the pair got out of the water on their own, and deputies gave them both citations for kayaking without personal floatation devices. They reported no injuries.
On Sunday, Aug. 17, deputies got reports of multiple gunshots fired near the Windy Point Campground. They found a man smoking next to a campfire who admitted to firing around 20 shots from the parking area. The fire and cigarette near dry brush violated Stage 2 fire restrictions, so deputies issued him a summons for reckless endangerment for firing his gun and violating the ban. He fully extinguished his fire in the presence of the deputies.
