The Idaho Springs Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying the person who drove a stolen bus through a crash scene on Friday, Oct. 10, according to an Idaho Springs Police Department news release.
The alleged incident occurred as officers with the Idaho Springs Police Department were investigating a crash near mile marker 240.75 on eastbound Interstate 70. The officers at the scene received a call from dispatch that reported that a Clear Creek County Roundabout bus had been stolen out of Georgetown.
A few moments later, Clear Creek firefighters and officers with the Idaho Springs Police Department observed the stolen bus approaching at a high rate of speed.
The officers saw the stolen bus nearly come to a complete stop at the unrelated crash scene before accelerating toward emergency personnel. The driver of the stolen vehicle then made an abrupt maneuver between a tow truck and fire truck before entering a closed express lane where Colorado Department of Transportation workers and first responders were assisting.
The vehicle then reportedly continued accelerating toward the workers before weaving back into traffic toward a officer and fire personnel. The bus nearly collided with the first responders before striking a patrol vehicle and causing significant damage.
All personnel was able to move to safety and no injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
The suspect is described by the Idaho Springs Police Department as possibly being a male, Hispanic and in their mid 20s to 30s. There was also a female with him. Any relevant information should be reported by calling 303-980-7300.
The bus was later found abandoned in the 1500 block of West 13th Avenue in Denver and the suspect remains at-large, according to 9News reporting.
Both the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho Springs Police Department are investigating.
