When people come to visit Summit County they want nothing more than to have a great and memorable trip.

Whether it is a short day trip or a weeklong vacation, guests want to enjoy the beauty around them without stressing about the little things. Frisco-based Pioneer Sports said it aims to help alleviate some of the stress that can arise during a long day exploring the High Country.

Pioneer Sports was been named the Best Ski/Snowboard Shop as well as Best Bike Shop/Rental in the 2025 Best of Summit contest.

Pioneer Sports has been providing guests with quality goods and services since it started serving Summit County in 1980.

“We really strive to provide the best quality and the best service,” company operations manager Josh Gammel said.

With locations right off of Interstate 70 in Frisco and in Dillon, Pioneer Sports serves as a convenient hub for those seeking ski and snowboard rentals in the winter as well as bike rentals in the summer.

“We are really fortunate especially with our Frisco location that we are right next door Walmart as well as on the way to so many world-class resorts,” Gammel said. “We are very, very grateful for that.”

Pioneer Sports offers rental packages that fit each guest. For ski rentals specifically, there are four different packages for people to choose from ranging from sport and performance to demo. For those who do not know what ski/snowboard would be best for them, Pioneer Sports walks each guest through the rental process.

“We really pride ourselves on the connection with the customer,” Gammel said. “Just having a conversation with them. Asking the right questions to ensure that we can provide the customer with exactly what they are looking for. Or making changes or recommendations if we feel something could better suit them.”

After setting up skiers and riders with rentals throughout the winter season, Pioneer Sports shifts to a bike rental shop for the short, but sweet summer season. The rental shop is outfitted with road bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes, kids bikes and hybrid bikes.

Pioneer Sports in Frisco is located at 842 N. Summit Boulevard. The Frisco location is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Adult rental packages range from $35 to $62 per day for walk-in rates, but online orders range from $25.55 to $45.26 per day. Adult snowboard rentals range from $42 to $65 per day for walk in rates, but online orders range from $30.66 to $45.26.

Kids rental skis are $18.25 per day for online orders and $25 for walk-ins.

All prices listed were current as of September 2025.

Bike rental rates vary by the type of bike and the number of hours.

The shop also offers disc golf gear and other outdoor recreation equipment and clothing.
