Police provide details on incident involving a man’s fatal fall from a balcony in Dillon
The Dillon Keystone Police Department believes the man who fell from an apartment building balcony Saturday, Aug. 30, was climbing the outside of the building when he fell.
Sgt. Craig Johnson wrote in an email to Summit Daily that witnesses saw Benjamin Daugherty climbing the backside of an apartment building at 330 E. Labonte St. before he fell from “approximately” the third floor.
Johnson wrote that Daugherty was not renting a unit in the building and “had no affiliation to the location of the fall.” Police believe drugs and alcohol “were a factor” in Daugherty’s death, he added.
Police received a call around 8:12 p.m. reporting an intoxicated man in the area of Dillon Town Park and responded in less than a minute, Johnson wrote. Officers did not locate the man, who was later identified as Daugherty.
The reporting party “was known to” Daugherty, Johnson said, and reported that he had ingested psilocybin mushrooms.
Around 15 minutes after officers arrived at the park, they received another call reporting a man, later identified as Daugherty, had fallen off the apartment building. That reporting party was different than the first and reported Daugherty was not conscious or breathing.
Officers and medical personnel responded to the building and administered lifesaving measures, which were unsuccessful, Johnson wrote.
Johnson said Daugherty “was not with anybody at the time of the fall,” but witnesses did see him climbing the backside of the building. Police believe drugs and alcohol factored into Daugherty’s decision to climb the building, Johnson said.
