Silverthorne’s Red Gerard earned his second X Games gold medal on the final day of the winter X Games in Aspen on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Coming off a silver medal at the Laax Open last week, Gerard put together a strong first run during the playoff round of the X Games men’s snowboard slopestyle competition.

Gerard’s first run was highlighted by several smooth rail slides at the top of the course before landing a switch backside 1260, a frontside 1440 and a backside 1800 at the bottom of the venue.

The run earned Gerard a score of 87.66, which was enough for the 2018 Olympic gold medalist to qualify for the five-man final in the fourth overall spot.

Wanting to defend his 2024 X Games gold medal, Gerard attempted to up the technicality, difficulty and style of his run. During his first of two runs in finals, Gerard laced together a switch backside 1620, a frontside 1440 and a huge backside 1800.

The run earned Gerard a score of 88.33 to top the rankings after the first round of runs in finals.

Feeling like he needed to slightly improve his run if he wanted to win the competition, Gerard executed on a switch boardslide on the up-flat-down rail before landing a switch backside triple 1620 and a backside 1800. The run boosted Gerard’s score to 92.66.

Gerard was momentarily threatened by Mark McMorris when he managed to land a clean run. The run was an improvement from McMorris’ first finals run, but was not enough to top Gerard in first place.

After a few bobbles during Taiga Hasegawa’s final run, Gerard earned his second-consecutive X Games gold medal in the men’s snowboard slopestyle competition. McMorris took second with Hasegawa following in third.

Earlier in the three-day competition on Friday, Jan. 24, Frisco’s Lily Dhawornvej competed in the women’s snowboard knuckle huck competition. At just 15-years-old, Dhawornvej squared off against some of the best women riders in the world and managed to claim a bronze medal with a frontflip off the knuckle of the big air jump.

Summit County’s Ellie Weiler followed Dhawornvej in fourth, while Kokomo Murase took first and Mia Brookes finished in second.

Dhawornvej also competed in the women’s snowboard street style competition on Saturday afternoon. She took third overall in the second playoff bracket, missing the final by a spot.

Summit County was also well represented in the men’s snowboard halfpipe competition on Thursday, Jan. 23. Leadville’s Jason Wolle placed seventh overall in his X Games debut while Summit County resident Lucas Foster took fourth overall.
