Summit County reminds trail users to use etiquette as leaf peeping season arrives

The fall color season in Summit County comes in September and October, and those months are also the peak usage timeframe for Aspen Alley, according to Summit County, which manages the trail jointly with the town of Breckenridge.

Aspen Alley is a popular leaf peeping trail, and a county news release states locals and visitors can be good stewards of the trail by following trail etiquette.

The release encourages users to be aware of their surroundings to minimize conflict. It states that uphill traffic and on-foot users have the right-of-way, dogs must be leashed on Aspen Alley, children should stay near adults, users taking photos should stand off the trail and bikers should be prepared to yield to hikers while going downhill.

It also reminds trail users to park legally when visiting Aspen Alley, which has limited parking at its top and bottom. Additional parking for Aspen Alley is available at the Breckenridge Ice Arena lot, though, as users can hike a mile on the Illinois Creek Trail to reach the leaf peeping destination.

The release also encourages leaf peepers to check out less crowded trails, like Hiker’s Gold, which does not allow bikers, Mineral Hill and X10U8 trails in French Gulch, and the Pence Miller Trail near the Breckenridge Gondola. Leaf peepers can find more trails at Trails.Colorado.gov or on the COTREX app.
