The Summit High School girls volleyball team is steadily working towards surpassing its final record from last fall.
After beginning the 2025 season with a loss to West Grand on Aug. 26, Summit traveled to its first neutral-site tournament of the season on Friday, Aug. 29. In the team’s first game of the tournament, Summit took on Adams City and dominated from start to finish.
The Tigers won the first set 25-13 before securing an even larger, 25-8, win in the second frame. Summit closed out the match with a 25-13 win to claim its first victory of the season.
Summit then took on Smoky Hill later in the day, where the team fell in four sets, 3-1. The next day on Saturday, Aug. 30, Summit faced Platte Canyon and Pomona in the tournament. In a best-of-three format, Platte Canyon beat Summit, 2-1, before the Tigers returned to the court to shutout Pomona, 2-0.
With two wins under the team’s belt, Summit then hosted Evergreen High School on Thursday, Sept. 4, for the team’s first home game of the season. With the stands packed with students, Summit put on a show.
Summit claimed the win in the opening set, defeating the Evergreen Cougars, 25-19. Despite being able to secure an early match lead, Evergreen responded by winning the second set, 25-22. With the match tied at one set each, Summit dug deep to narrowly win the third frame by two points, 25-23.
Wanting to put the match away, Summit captured a 25-20 win in the fourth set to record its third victory of the season.
Summit tried to extend its winning streak to three games when it took on Standley Lake on Saturday, Sept. 6. Although the the team put up a fight, Summit fell to the talented Class 4A team in Westminster, 3-0.
Just one game below .500, Summit returned to its home court to take on fellow 4A Western Slope league rival Battle Mountain High School on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The Battle Mountain Huskies got off to a fast start in the best-of-five match, scoring a quick two points. However, once the Tigers settled into the rhythm of the match, the team started to score points in a hurry.
With sophomore Ruby Snyder, senior Saige Heflin and senior Zoie Davis-Teets setting the tone for the team, Summit brought the score within two points, 8-6, as the set neared the halfway point.
With some momentum starting to build for the team, Summit continued to claw for each and every point. The team’s focus and determination resulted in Summit taking its first lead of the game in the waning moments of the opening set.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the team’s lead did not last long as Battle Mountain went on a three-point run to reclaim the lead. Battle Mountain closed out the set by sending impressive serves and fiery spikes over the net. The Huskies won the first set, 25-20.

While it was Battle Mountain who got out to a hot start in the first frame, Summit put up a string of points early on in the second frame. The Summit offense was eventually stalled by Battle Mountain’s defense, leading to a lengthy run by the Huskies.
Trailing 12-10, junior Torie Durloo and sophomore Reese Melby put their bodies on the line to try to stay within reach of Battle Mountain. Even though Summit did everything in its power to tie the match at one set each, the Tigers fell to the Huskies, 25-18.
Needing to win a set to stave off the conclusion of the match, Davis-Teets and Summit came together to challenge Battle Mountain.Remaining stoic in the face of adversity, Summit worked together to score points and prevent Battle Mountain from extending its lead.
Summit’s comeback attempt came up just short, losing to Battle Mountain in the third set 25-16. The 3-0 loss drops Summit’s record to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. Although Summit was not able to secure the win over Battle Mountain, the team is confident that it will continue to notch big wins and outdo last season’s record of 4-19.
“They are definitely the top team so far in our league, so I think we showed up for sure,” Davis-Teets said. “We came out hard and we put everything out on the court, even though we lost. It helps seeing how close we are and seeing like us come back or match their points.”
Summit will have another chance to tie the amount of wins it saw last season when it takes on Steamboat Springs High School at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
“We are going to practice hard,” Davis-Teets said. “We took away some great things from this game like blocking and serve receive. We are going to go practice hard and hit the weight room and really put it all out there and try too get these next few wins.”
The game will serve as Summit’s second league game of the season and is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
