Summit High School celebrates warm spring with breezy musical production

During one of the warmest springs on record for Summit County, the high school theater department has channeled ocean breezes and white Greek villas with blue trim to set the stage for their production of “Mamma Mia!” Students sporting linen pants, botanical prints and sandals sing the peppy, nostalgic lyrics of ABBA while a disco ball spins overhead. “Mamma Mia!” will be performed at Summit High School three times this week: Friday, April 10, at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 11, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 12, at 2 p.m.
Many of the leads actors from the school’s fall drama production return to the stage in prominent roles for the spring musical. Satori Adnan plays the “young and sweet” Sophie with wide-eyed expressions of hopefulness as she attempts to sort out who her father is the day before her wedding. Ada Wiese and Sophie Sullivan flank Adnan with graceful singing voices as Sophie’s friends, Lisa and Ali. Sawyer Boviard matches Adnan’s sweet youthfulness as her groom, Sky. Kate Eldredge plays Donna, Sophie’s mother, and infuses the character with frustrated energy as she reunites with her past amours. Sonnett Renoux and Lily Arellano play Donna’s friends, Tonya and Rosie respectively, and play up the women’s striking personalities with bold line delivery and poses.
The three leading men, and possible fathers to the character Sophie, are brought to life by Henry Billingsworth as Sam, Curran Mullaly as Harry and Gavin Nations as Bill, three delightful foils to each other on stage. The contrasting portraits provide a great deal of humor.
The ensemble cast helps fill the auditorium with ABBA’s anthems and will have any ‘dancing queens’ jiving in their seats.
Alena Riberdy helps organize the musical numbers as the dance captain and associate choreographer. Cayman Pingley leads the production as the assistant director.
Pre-sale tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for students and can be purchased at TinyUrl.com/2nuay937. Day of show tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students.
