Kudos to the Summit Board of County Commissioners and county government staff on their attempts to rein in overspending at the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. The elected county commissioners have the power to set county budgets, and they have done so.

While the elected sheriff has done great things to support community priorities such as mental health and protecting the rights of all, he has missed the mark on spending. Summit County residents and visitors don’t want a mini-military here, we want peace officers who work with the community — including on fiscal management.
