The human remains and personal belongings found between Aug. 2-5 near Officers Gulch belonged to the same person, according to Summit County Coroner Amber Flenniken.
Flenniken said a canine tooth found at the scene, which her office sent to a DNA testing company in Massachusetts, returned a positive match to a sample from a family member of Sean Marquardt.
Marquardt, a Vail resident, went missing in May, and personal property found near the human remains belonged to him, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities unsuccessfully searched for Marquardt in May after deputies found his vehicle near Officers Gulch. They received a report of possible human remains Aug 2, and the Sheriff’s Office, coroner’s office, Summit County Rescue Group, Vail Police Department and a forensic anthropologist from Mesa County searched the area Aug. 2-5.
After 200 personnel hours of searching, authorities located and recovered the human remains.
