Body found near Summit Cove, Summit County Sheriff’s Office says

The body of an adult Hispanic man was found in a field west of the Summit Cove neighborhood on Saturday night, April 27, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Sunday morning.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., the body was reported to law enforcement officials, the news release states. The body was discovered by a local hiker near a neighborhood trail. The man’s identity and cause of death are unknown at this time and a preliminary investigation revealed no obvious indications of foul play.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss of life,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons stated. “Check on your family, friends, and co-workers, if someone is missing, please report it immediately.”



The sheriff’s office does not have a concern for public safety at this time but the incident remains an active investigation, the news release states. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with additional information regarding the case to call Detective Sergeant Mark Gafari at 970-423-8960.

Update – Sunday, April 28 8:30 p.m.



The Summit County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday night, April 28, that the body of a man found Saturday night in a field west of the Summit Cove neighborhood has been positively identified.

The Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Summit County Rescue Group, performed a search on Sunday in the area where the man’s body was found, according to a news release.

The search produced items that belonged to the deceased man that were used, along with information from the community, to identify the man.

“Thank you to our community, my staff, and the Summit County Rescue Group for the work and compassion that has gone into this case so far,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons stated.

The man’s identity will be released to the public by the Summit County Coroner’s Office “at a later date,” according to the sheriff’s office, as will a cause and manner of death.

The sheriff’s office reiterated in the release that it does not have a concern for public safety at this time but the incident remains an active investigation.
